“Real-time group communications for anyone with a mobile phone.”
We love making sure important innovation isn’t lost to history. That’s why we archived GroupMe throughout their meteoric rise over the past year. Just knowing how their front page evolved tells us so much about tech innovation.
- In August, 2010 the focus was on interopability: GroupMe “works on any phone”
- By early 2011 GroupMe began marketing toward their perhaps unexpected user base of women.
- As familiarity with “Group Messaging” grew, GroupMe needed to appear more fun and enticing. And that’s exactly where the third major redesign took them by Spring, 2011.
All this evolution, and this is just their website. It reflects what GroupMe saw in the fast-changing environment, with plenty of competitors. Initially they had to tell us they were creating “Real-time group communications for anyone with a mobile phone.” Now, they simply tell us “Group Messaging.” One year, but three major iterations of the marketing, messaging and branding. Impressive.
